To meet the education requirement of group of heterogeneous learners up till levels of pre degree is a job performed by national open school which is now known as NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF OPEN SCHOOLING (NIOS). School began its journey as a project equipped with flexibilities in built by CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) in 1979. It was suggested in 1986 by National Education Policy that national open school be strengthened to extend the facilities of open learning at secondary level in a phased way all across India being an independent system backed up by its own examination and curriculum that leads to certificate.
As a result, open school was set up by the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) as well as Indian Government in 1989 November. On open school, the CBSE’s pilot project, with NOS, was amalgamated. Via one resolution, Open School was awarded the authority to examine, certify and register the student studying under it till courses of pre degree level; this resolution was F 5-24/90, dated September 14th, schedule 3, and published on October 20th 1990 in Gazette of India.
The organization’s nomenclature was changed by MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) to (NIOS) NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF OPEN SCHOOLING from NOS (national open school) focusing on a single mission for providing continuing and relevant education at stage of school through system of open learning up till level of pre degree with a purpose of prioritizing groups of client as a substitute to system of formal in regards with national documents of normative policy as well as in response to people’s assessment of requirement and all the way through for making it a portion of contribution:

What Does NIOS do?
Interested learners are provided with opportunities by NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF OPEN SCHOOLING getting below mentioned study programs/courses available to them via the mode of ODL (Open & Distant Learning).
For age group of 14 plus years, program of OBE (Open Basic Education); a, b, c stages for adults and adolescents those are similar to V, VIII, III classes like in system of formal schooling.

By offering a continuum of learning on the basis of curriculum grade to make sure the education quality of neo literates, children, NFE completers, and school left/drop outs, it envisages the system of schooling.
For OBE program to be implemented, approximately 341 agencies have collaboration with NIOS to offer facilities and services at their respective centers of studies. To zila saksharta samiti and voluntary partner agencies, resource supports like study materials, model curricula, joint certification, OBE popularity, and resource orientation are provided for the implementation of programs of OBE.
How Does NIOS Function?
Through network that comprises five departments, 3367 study centers, and 11 regional centers, the NIOS is operated in country and abroad. This open school has more than 1.5 million candidates enrolled with it under senior secondary and secondary stages. It is world’s biggest system of open school. |
